A family of globular proteins, the most common being the serum albumins.

Albumin is the term used to describe a family of globular proteins, the most common being the serum albumins. Albumins in general are transport proteins that bind to and transport various ligands. Human albumin types include human serum albumin (the main protein of human blood plasma, constituting ~50% of human plasma proteins), alpha-fetoprotein (a fetal plasma protein that binds various cations, fatty acids and bilirubin), vitamin D-binding protein (binds to vitamin D and its metabolites, and to fatty acids), afamin (transports lipidated Wnt proteins and Vitamin E) and extracellular matrix protein 1 (a less canonical albumin, which regulates bone mineralization).
